Our weekly Team NLP blog where you will find inspiration and actionable advice on how to build healthy habits, resilience, and connections in our unprecedented times.

Well we finally moved out of our house on the 8th March and into temporary accommodation as we finalise our search.  It is quite liberating being in this in between place as it creates space in the mind to consider new things. I also found that the stuff I sent to the auction did really well....and yet it has been hidden away doing nothing for years.  I am going to buy myself a reward this week and then the rest can go towards the house move.  I can feel a nice new hand bag coming on.  So de-cluttering your life really does de-clutter your mind.

This week I want to talk about how to prepare yourself for coming out of lockdown.

Are you ready?

What are you focusing on?  what thoughts are you having?  Your thoughts are your perceptions about the world.  If you think about it all you have are your perceptions.  You perceive what’s going on.  For example, you perceive what someone means when they talk to you or you perceive what you believe their behaviour means.  So the only way to experience the outside world is through your perceptions. The good news is that if your perceptions are not serving you they can be changed.

Approximately two million bits of information hit our nervous system via our senses every second yet we can only process a small percentage of this information.  In the book, Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, he said that the brain can only process consciously around about 134 bits per second.  So you have two million bits coming in and we can only process the 134 consciously.  That’s a massive difference between two million and 134.  So how do we cope?  Our filters unconsciously figure out what we focus on based on our memories, experiences, environment, beliefs and values.  In reality we make up our perceptions which means we can also change them, and thereby, change our experience of the world.

With the NLP concept of perception is projection everything we perceive outside is a projection from inside of us.  Our perception of events, our perceptions of people, are perceptions of whatever is happening around us, is a projection from inside of us.  And, probably a projection which is at the unconscious level.  So what I want you to start to do, as you change your thinking is begin to think that everything you perceive in the outside world is a projection from inside of you.  Now there might be some things that you go and look at in the outside world and you go “wow well that’s my projection, that’s really good”.  There might be other things that you might look at and you go “woo that’s my projection, that’s not really good”.  NLP is about learning how to change your projections. The first step is to focus on what you want to achieve coming out of lockdown and not on what you don't want!

Warm wishes
