What are you capable of?
Apr 28, 2025
Yesterday I went to the London Marathon to support one of my dearest friends who was running. We stood at the 22 mile point as this is where I know from experience that the runners need the most support. I love this shot that I got of Eilish McColgan as she was well on her way to becoming the 8th woman over the finish line, setting a new Scottish record. Well done Eilish! She was the fastest British finisher in the women's race finishing in 2.24.25, beating the 2.26.52 personal best of her mother, Liz, who won the marathon in 1996. It was a brilliant day and my friend who has recently turned 60, did brilliantly too. There is a tribe called the The Tarahumara, who are an indigenous group in mexico's Chihuahua, famous for their their exceptional long-distance running ability. Their tradition of running long distances, sometimes for over 100 miles, is deeply ingrained in their culture and is used for various purposes like inter-village communication, transportation, and hunting. They believe that runners do not reach their prime until they are approaching 60 years of age. What an interesting belief which challenges our western mindset.
What if what you believed is possible about yourself could be challenged? What if there are opportunities for you that you haven't noticed yet because you are holding yourself back?
I have run four marathons and I know that my NLP knowledge and skills helped to get me over the finish line. Why? Because I learnt about the power of focus and belief. In NLP we talk about "where your attention goes, energy flows" meaning that focusing your attention on something leads to increased effort and engagement in that area. If your attention is scattered, your energy may be less effective. This idea suggests that directing your focus towards your goals and aspirations will channel your energy towards achieving them. This in addition to changing my beliefs about my own potential helped me have the success that I enjoy today.
