Swap your New Year's Resolutions for an Italian Version
Jan 20, 2026
As some of you know, I spend a lot of time in Italy at our rustic town house. I enjoy the slower pace of life and 'work to live' culture. As I contemplated my New Year's resolutions for 2026, I decided to take a different approach. I have Italianised my resolutions. Because when your goals are rooted in pleasure and intention rather than pressure, they’re far more likely to stick. And let’s be honest…this kind of challenge sounds a lot more appealing than a 5 a.m. alarm and a reluctant trip to the gym. Here are some simple swaps you can make:
🍝 Swap “losing weight” for “cooking from scratch.”
In Italy, food is about nourishment and joy, not restriction. Cooking from scratch and savouring meals mirrors the Italian approach. Focus on quality ingredients, smaller portions, and shared meals that nourish both body and spirit.
🕯️Swap “be more social” for “host intimate gatherings.”
It’s no secret that relationships are everything in Italy. Social life is intentional and ritual-based. Hosting small gatherings echoes Italy’s emphasis on la convivialità: meaningful connection through food, conversation, and unhurried time together rather than crammed calendars.
💪 Swap “go to the gym” for “take daily walks.”
A daily stroll through town or around your neighbourhood reflects the Italian habit of staying active naturally (walking to the market, the café, or enjoying an evening passeggiata) instead of isolating exercise in a gym.
💶 Swap “save money” for “spend intentionally.”
True Italian style values quality over quantity. Cut back on excess and focus on thoughtful, intentional purchases: local goods, craftsmanship, and experiences that bring joy and meaning, rather than simply accumulating things.
By Italianising your resolutions, you’re not just setting goals, you’re embracing a lifestyle that balances pleasure, intention, and connection in 2026. Are you ready for a change?
